Flat jet black
Posted by Edwin on Thursday, March 19, 2020 10:17 AM

I'm building a model of a car with a fabric soft top. The color of the top is flat black.

i am using Tamiya acrylics, Tamiya enamels and Mr Hobby aqueous. All their flat blacks dry to a very slight brownish grey hue. The gloss black looks jet black however once a flat coat is applied, it takes on a slight greyish hue.

i remember many years ago Pactra had a flat boot black (think that was the name of the color). That came out flat pure black, if I remember correctly. Does anyone know of a brand of flat black that is similar?

Thanks!

What sort of lighting are you viewing the different flat blacks under? Lighting: sunlight, incandescent, fluorescent, LED, etc. will affect the appearance. I always thought that basic Tamiya Flat Black was very much neutral in tone. Especially under sunlight.

Have a look at Humbrol Flat Black, enamel or acrylic, if you’re not happy with what you’ve tried so far.

I agree about the Tamiya looks pretty black to me.

Good point, Stikpusher. I am using white LED lights but let me try viewing it in daylight.

Testors flat black enamel is pretty black. I use craft paint myself, shot over Stynylrez black primer. Then I can add Liquitex satin varnish to the mix to get the sheen I want ( black convertible tops aren't generally totally flat but have some sheen depending on age).

Testors also makes a semi-gloss black enamel.  I have even seen it in their spray cans but it is not common in most of their racks.
