Humbrol enamel thinner burns through Clear Coat
Posted by dazzjazz on Sunday, March 22, 2020 3:41 AM

Hi

I've had this disaster twice now.
While attempting some weathering procedure, I found that Humbrol enamel thinner burns right through several coats of clear coat that is well dry - in one case, it was two years dry! Of course this is disappointing, but given the number of tutorials out there about using enamel thinners with panel liner or pigments.

ive used both Tamiya and Mr Hobby clear varnishes.

what the hell am I doing wrong please?

If your clear coat is enamel, then any enamel thinner or mineral spirit will eat through it. Use a water based thinner.

I find Humbrol enamel thinners to be much stronger than most mineral spirits. Humbrol eats through my plastic bottles, which stand up to lacquer thinner. I recommend odorless spirits, such as Mona Lisa brand odorless thinner over an acrylic clear. Turpenoid is ok, too.
