When they were first being promoted they were advertised as being mixable with literally any thinner. There's videos of people using Vallejo's airbrush thinner and getting decent results. These turned out to be entirely inaccurate when they were in the wild.

 

Well thanks for the clarification !  I went to their website yesterday, they had a pretty extensive page dedicated to just the Real Color line there. As I mentioned in my other post they specifically mentioned using their RC thinners or other paint brand lacquer thinners and alcohol thinners. Or alcohol or non vinyl lacquer thinner. It left me quite interested in trying this stuff with conventional hardware store lacquer thinner as I use in Tamiya acrylics fwiw. But I can see non solvent thinners like Vallejo or Aztek being a problem. Maybe they changed the formula since it first came out, too bad you had trouble.

Be careful with this. A lot of early marketing and youtube videos show they're able to mix with a lot of stuff, when I tried it myself I ended up with goop. They changed the recipe or lied in the marketing, customer support ignored me and many others when we wrote to them asking what was up with the mixing problems.

 

 

 

Not sure what you used for thinner but their website says Real Color is acrylic lacquer. It says their own Real Color thinner works great and other thinners for acrylic lacquer from other brands. Then it says non vinyl lacquer thinner and alcohol. So those appear to be the choices, something like x22 Tamiya ( basically an alcohol thinner), isopropyl, lacquer thinner. Beyond those you might be getting into trouble. I haven't tried these paints yet but they sound interesting.

Thanks. By experimenting I meant with other "lacquer" thinners. Like Mr Color or Tamiya or plain old automotive lacquer thinner. I don't have reason to try anything else. They're advertised as lacquers and that's why I use them. And I definitely thin them to spray them.

I've used it over Tamiya Fine White Primer with no issues. I also haven't found a need to thin it for the a/b.

Now, I do have an issue with color accuracy. While I'm not armed with an good sets of USN paint chips, I've seen enough color photos, other lines of paint and other models to have an empirical idea of what those colors should look like. I find the AK a bit "bright" for my taste, more to follow.

I've been spraying them over Stynylrez and had no problems. Also over Dupont VariPrime with no problem. I bought the Real Colors thinner when I first ordered the paints and that's all I've used with them. Keep thinking I'm going to experiment with other thinners but haven't. I like these paints, they've been easy to work with so far.

I’ve only used them once so far. I primed the model with Tamiya Gray Liquid Surface Primer, and then painted a black coat on top of that. Don’t reemember what I used for the black paint. Then I airbrushed on the Real Color paint thinned with Tamiya X-20A.
