Siver/chrome over black
Posted by Foxy on Monday, May 4, 2020 4:58 AM

Hi again all.. Time for another complete novice question..

I am about to start assembling my first scale model.. However after studying the painting process I've realised the motorcycle engine assembly is primarily black with chrome or silver parts or chrome and silver small additions.. So my question is.. Can I assemble the whole unit and then after priming it.... Airbrush it all black and then repaint  the parts that are chrome/silver with a brush? Instead of spraying them separately and then trying to assemble/glue painted parts? I guess what I'm trying to ask is will chrome paint or silver adequately cover black paint?

I am using vellejo acrylic paints..

Thank you in advance..

Yes.  Painting silver or chrome over a black base coat is a common trick to deepen the reflectivity.   Selective masking may be in store here.  Base coat the engine black.   When dry mask the cylinder cooling fins.  spray the chrome on the solid parts, transmission, oil tank, etc.  Perhaps the exhaust too.   When dry remove the masking on the fins.   Lightly drybrush the fins with the silver.  Go slow.  It is easy to add more paint.   Much harder to add less.   This will highlight the fins and deepen the shadows in the gaps between

Thank you for your reply... Much appreciated, and thank you for the tip on dry brushing, I would never have thought of it even tho I've read articles on it.. I'm starting to think the learning is more enjoyable than the building at the moment :)
