If you don't want to get into airbrushing then I second the suggestion for Testors Dullcoat in a can. Put it on on a fairly dry day though with not a lot of humidity in the air is all.

You can use Future for a flat coat by adding Tamiya X21 Flat Base to it. A ratio of roughly 2 parts Flat Base to 8 parts Future is a good starting point. Mix them thoroughly. I suggest that you test on a pant mule before you go straight to your current project.

But there are plenty of dull coats out there to try as well. My personal favorite currently is Humbrol.

For a battleship you should use flat, which rules out Future floor finish.

I use testors Dullcote in a can. I do need to broaden my skills to include a/b flats and it sounds as though there are plenty of good ones.

Hand painting those monsters would be more than I would ever want to take on.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Clear Coat Questions

As I progress my skills and tools into my new hobby of model building I came up to what seems to me a pretty important part of modeling. Clear Coat! I am nearing completion of my Trumpeter Queen Elizabeth 1943 and I didnt use primer or anyting. While waiting on a couple of paints to finish her up I decided to work a little on my next project, the Tamiya KGV in 1/350 scale.

This time I started a little different. I sanded down everything that needed sanded on the hull, and drilled out all of the portholes. I bought some Tamiya spray primer and am going to primer the hull before painting in hopes of a better end result in the look and lay of the paint. I will actually be priming every part before building and painting this kit.

While on the subject of prepaint and assembly, I started thinking to myself about adding a clear coat once the model is done to give it a good finish. I have in my tamiya paint arsenal their xf-86 flat clear. But it is in a regular paint bottle and I feel like brush painting on a clear coat will end in a result that I dont want, which would be uneven and having the possibility of brush strokes visible, and cloudiness.

I feel a spray can of clear would be much easier to get a even coat of clear on it and achieve the look I am after.

So what spray on clear coats work best over acrylic paint? And what methods have you found work best?
