tamiya clear red hardened in bottle
Posted by phil172 on Saturday, June 27, 2020 7:45 PM

I have used Tamiya paints a lot for a long time and have never experienced this.  However, only in the last year have I used any of the clear shades.  I last used the clear red around the start of this year.  I opened the bottle to use it tonight and it was almost solid.  I put progressive amounts of Mr Levelling Thinner in it and it came back to something that seemed like Tamiya clear.  Are these paints prone to hardening?

I would say no, that's not normal. I have a clear red that's perfectly usable despite being at least 20 years (and probably more) old. It's only used infrequently, but it definitely has been opened and as far as I can recall, is the only bottle of clear red I've ever bought.

I’ve had a few Tamiya clear type paints thicken up in the bottle over extended periods of time.
