Future (Pledge Floor Care Finish) question.
Posted by Markeno on Saturday, July 18, 2020 12:41 PM

I awas wonder if there is a suggestion on how long to let paint dry before topcoating with Future for a clear coat?  Some I used Createx airbrush paint on and the others a Vallejo  Model Color.

I have used the Pledge Floor Care Finish for a clear on a few models, but they had all been painted for numerous days or more.  I have done some parts this morning and was thinking of trying this evening with the clear but don't know if that would be too soon.

I don't get around to getting out the spray booth/box too often and wouldn't mind just knocking it out quickly.  Or I will end up and wait until later in the week or next weekend.

I usually wait at least overnight. If I finish my airbrushed base colors on the afternoon or evening of one day, I feel safe by mid morning or midday of the  next day to apply the Future coat. Especially with acrylics such as Tamiya. With enamels, I may wait an extra day or so.

Thank you for the replies.  I will wait see if I have some time tomorrow afternoon to put the Future on then.  I really didn't want to push it and have to start all over on the pieces.  They are projects that I have had around a good while, but have had a little time to get back to them.

I apply decals on top of Future after just 2-3 hours, never had an issue. But if you're painting, then yes, wait at least a day. That would also depend on the drying conditions; air circulation helps greatly.

This is the result of not letting the base coat cure long enough before applying Future. The Future micro cracked.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

I was wondering when it might be ok to put on Decals, although these projects are not quite ready for that bit.

I did clear them this afternoon.  It went fine, although it gave a pebblely finish unlike the last time I used it.  I did see someone reporting they had that one some post somewhere, but no information as to why they may have had that.  I am wondering if it was due to how thick or quickly it was put on.  The last time I used it, the surface was textured, so maybe that is part of it, and I was putting on a number of light coats.  Where this time the surfaces were smooth and I wasn't as slow in the application.  The finish it fine for what I was doing though.  Two of the parts of final parts for one model that will be getting assembled hopefully shortly.  Although I expect I will be looking to buy new decals for it before I can finish the model.  The other is a model that will be getting lighting and electronics worked out now that it finally has paint.

It should be ready to decal today in terms of dry time..

Sounds like the clear didn't go on wet enough or the surface was plaqued with dust.

I don't know if Pebblely is the correct term, but I thought they may be refering to that odd look where a smooth surface metal case has those little bumps all over it, the flat stone like look.  I don't think there was much as far as dust.  I am not sure it with photograph well, and it has been a long day.

Pledge usually self levels pretty well from what I recall. I really don't use it for much of anything anymore but I don't recall pebbly or much orange peel effect either. Now and then I drag it out and it just sprays on without issue. I didn't stop using it because of how it goes on but rather some other properties and then different products coming along that I like better for my purposes. Maybe someone who uses it more will be along and can help you out better than I can. But a picture would help of course.

You may want to look at the second part of this document that talks specifically about spraying Future and what pressure to use.
