Have you ever had a new spray can leak out?
Posted by JimLo on Saturday, October 24, 2020 5:02 PM

I keep my paints inside an unused unplugged fridge in the garage. For more than 8 weeks I've been smelling a paint smell in it. I didn't see any leaks. One old but unopened Testors One Coat Lacquer spray can had some sticky thick yellow substance on the bottom so I thought it was rubber glue from the paper label that is melting off. I had this spray can for maybe almost tens years. I thought it was my two new Rust-Oleum spray cans so took those out. I put a piece of cardboard under the spray can with the "melting rubber glue".

Today I discovered that the Testors One-Coat Lacquer had somehow all leaked out. The cardboard was soaked and glued to the surface and the paint substance is thick and sticky. The can felt empty but it was never opened.

Have you ever experienced this ? Is the inside of my fridge that hot? I noticed my fridge actually insulates the cold even on hot days it is cool inside. Or is this can defective ?

All spray cans leak, and gradually lose pressure. As the propellants escape, it can leave more corrosive elements behind to attack other seals. With a can that old, I'm surprised it was still useful. But as noted, all cans are leaking to some degree, as the valve design is not a 100% seal for eternity.

JimLo;

     Funny  that you should bring this up. I discovered that three of my cans of Tamiya Enamel Spray and one Testors Clear did this in a fireproof box in the Garage.

    The odd part was the product on the outside of the can was like a sticky Lacquer or enamel Base material. Like the clear they start making the Pigment mix with.

 I will say that this is the first time I have run across this. The older cans of Pactra and Testors are over twenty years old, Still spray fine and aren't quite Empty yet. Maybe a car or two left in them.

Sounds like the same substance I discovered. It's a thick stickymaybe base material. I wonder if it has to do with keeping the cans in an air-tight container? I don't think spray cans normally "breathe" or expel any gases or pressure? I can see maybe if I put the can in my luggage and had it checked in to the unpressurized cargo area of a plane it might do this but not at ground level? It seems like of all my paints the Testors and Model Master ones give me the most issues when they are old. For example I noticed that Testors silver enamel never dries. I had it on a model for over ten years but because I had some plastic food wrap covering it the paint seemed to have melted like it never cured. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the info. I thought keeping it in a cool environment might extend their life but I guess not. (I think I have to buy less "stash" paint.)

thanks

Yes, I have seen several Tamiya cans leak at the bottom of the weld seam on the body of the can where it meets the base of the can. I have one unused can which still has the plastic wrap on it which has had some brownish leakage which I suspect has been restricted somewhat by the wrapping. I siuspect that if the wrap wasn't there, the leakage would have been a bit more prominent.

I've definitely had one which had solid clumps/blooms of dried red paint stuck to that area.

I've had this problem with several cans of TESTORS paint. I keep mine in a cabinet in the house, so it remains climate controlled year round.

Building models since 1963.

I peeled off the label of the can and all seams , nozzle seems completely clean. I saw some slight remnants of the goo on the bottom seam of the cab but barely noticeable.
