Acrylic paint does not stick well?
Posted by BrianK on Sunday, October 25, 2020 1:21 PM

Doing some building again after not for a few years. I have a mix of Testors Acrylics and Enamels. I am being reminded that the Acrylics do not stick well. Masking as lightly as I can still pulls come paint off.

I do wash the parts first.

Does their primer really help?

Other suggestions?

Thanks.

With acrylics primer is a must not an option. I use Badger Stynylrez, started using that about three years ago now and never looked back. Enamel or acrylic goes over it well and sticks well, no trouble peeling masking tape at all. Just fwiw.

Full disclosure I really disliked Testors acrylics and gave up on threm quickly. They are hard to get good coverage with.

I'm in the camp of always prime. I use enamel or lacquer  primer because it seems to bite into the plastic a little, or at least goes on and won't come off. The difference if any between "lacquers", "enamels" and "acrylics" has gotten really blurred to me, so I tend to experiment and then go with what works. I like stynylrez as well, assume it's some sort of lacquer.

Washing parts is fine as long as you get the soap off afterwards. I don't unless it's an older kit or resin.

What IS important is to get all of your skin oil off the plastic. i used to use a product called "plastic prep" or such, recently I bought a bottle of 95% denatured ethyl alchohol and rub my model with that.

Welcome!

Testors acrylics are notorious for that,I don't use them, but on any acrylic a good enamel primer helps,I use the Tamiya stuff in the can. Also I always de-stick my masking tape.I stick it on and off the side of my fridge a couple of times to take some takiness off

Unless I detect some kind of film or coating on the plastic I just wipe everything down with mineral spirits to get skin oils and such off..... .
