questions for alclad2 users
Posted by Cowboy-Z on Saturday, November 7, 2020 9:42 PM

Hey gang,

So for the most part i do paint and decal sets for remote control car bodies called Mini-Z's (similar plastic to 1/24 models) and they require a pretty durable finish.

I'm about to try doing an F1 body and making it look like the RedBull Racing RB6.  I've decided to use alclad2 candy products to get that super shiny blue base.

The problem I've had in the past is these candy finishes tend to be a bit brittle and i'm unsure of whether its my technique or the product itself.

Technique wise I've tended to follow bottle directions and i feel that is where i may be lacking durability.  Their paint process for candy is Silver base->candy color->gloss clear and i find either the silver chips off the body or the candy chips off the silver. (the chipping happens no matter how clean I get the body)

Finally to my question:  Do you think adding "clear base" (which is a clear primer?) to the in-between steps help adhesion/durability?

Would the paint process Clear Base->Silver base->Clear base->candy color->gloss clear be helpful to improve durability or would it be overkill?

Thanks in advance.

I wonder what rocket scientists say to co-workers when one of them doesn't get it?

You can certainly try, but Alclad II is not durable at all. Even after top coats. Let us know how it turns out.
