How to separate different finishing coats?
Posted by Teenage Modeler on Monday, January 25, 2021 8:55 PM

When I was reading my AMT Corvette instructions, I saw that the engine block had 3 different finishing coats:

Matte/Flat

Satin/Semi-Gloss

Gloss

So how exactly do I clear coat the Engine Block with 3 different types of clear? Do I mask down the areas with different Clear Coats, or just spray the entire block with the same type of clear?

Also, do I have to paint and clear coat every part before assembling them?

Reading the instructions make me confused (O_o)

I would not assume you have to clear coat it to achieve what you want.  You could find a colour that has the correct sheen already; however,   I would find some photos on the Internet of an actual engine and judge for yourself how it should look. You could also mix some gloss clear in with some flat paint to get the correct sheen in one coach,  for example...

Rather than clearcoats, I have used paints with multiple sheens- matt black, semi-matt, and gloss, masking for each.  Either way, yes it requires masking.

To me it is hard to find a good semi-matt clearcoat.
