What are your favorite German armor paints?
I've been very busy testing various Ral colors and have settled on the following based on accuracy and sprayability:
a. AK Real Colors - AK made changes recently to their original Ral 7028, RC060. It is now the proper shade! These paints spray fantastically well. I thin 4:1 thinner to paint and they flow like a dream and cover great.
b. Mission Models Paints - I like MMP-011 for Ral 7028. These paints spray surprisingly well for a water based acrylic as long as you follow MMP instructions. Minimal to no tip dry and they cover just as well as solvent based paints in my opinion because of their artist quality pigmentation. Made in USA!
c. Hataka Red Line - absent Hataka's acrylic thinner (hard to find in USA), Hataka recommends thinning with Vallejo Thinner. I also add Vallejo Flow Improver. Colors are spot on for authentic Ral 7028 and other Ral colors.
d. I also like Hataka Orange Line (lacquer) but thin them with their thinner since it is much less noxious than using Mr Color thinners (regular or leveling). Hataka Orange Line sprays great and I like the fact they come in dropper bottles. Sprue Brothers sell them domestically (USA).
I do like spraying Tamiya (who doesn't!) but their Ral colors are a little off. I use a little "artistic license" and use mixes of XF-60, XF-55 or XF-59 when mimicking Ral 7028. Weathering rounds them out I guess and the result is still satisfying to my eye...I guess that is what ultimately matters...how it looks to the modeler!
Happy Easter
