Tamiya paint toxic?

Don't drink it, don't breathe it!

The Pigments are acrylic, the carrier is alcohol/IPA/ish based.

But you should be good on VOC's for brush painting.

Having said that, you will definately need a retarder, for the reasons already given, to brush paint.

IF you have an issue reacting to the paint, or thinner/cleaner, THEN take precautions, open window/air extraction, etc.

You are more likely to have issues if you use IPA/cellulose/lacquer for cleaning/spraying so I 'always/should' use a good quality 3M mask & VOC filters.

Don't forget you are likely to get the thinners on your hands when cleaning up, so consider using painters' rubber/vinyl gloves.

I have contact dermatitis from using gloves too long, but a lot less than from contact with IPA/Lacquer/paint!

does tamiya paint emit a lot of VOCs or anything else when used?(handbrushing)

I've handbrushed them and there is a slight smell, nothing strong, though you will need their retarder to hand brush them, otherwise they will gum up and look terrible.

I use isopropyl alcohol to thin for airbrushing, and Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver when I handbrush it.  I concur that its pretty harmless as far as the vapors go.

The acrylics are basically alcohol based. I use some Liquitex retarder in it for brushing small parts, for my purposes it's pretty docile and not much odor.

I don't know of any paint that emits a lot of VOCs just by having the jar open or brush painting In those quantities. However, a few things to consider -

Tamiya paints suck for brush painting, unless you use a retarder. Without, they dry quickly and pull themselves up while painting over previously painted areas. 

Tamiya is not what people (incorrectly) think of acrylic paints - it is not water based. Rather it is alcohol based acrylic, and thus does have VOCs in it. Acrylic is just the paint binder, not the carrier. Tamiya paint is in fact, flammable, because of the alcohol. 

if you or someone in your household is sensitive even to brush painting, I would suggest consulting a doctor, using a water based acylic like Vallejo, a good respirator mask, or maybe finding a different hobby if it's that bad. There are definitely non VOC alternatives to Tamiya out there.
