Alclad 2 Black Gloss Base. Drying issues
Posted by JLKahn on Monday, August 2, 2021 8:47 AM

Hi, I just started playing with Alclad's paints and have had some drying issues with the gloss black base that alclad paints aparently need if you want those mirror shine results. Being the impatient person I am, and never reading directions I applied the chrome finish I wanted and started handling it after only about 1 or 2 hours, and discovered it was still tacky to the touch. While I later learned the stuff is supposed to have a 24 hour drying/curing time after finally reading the directions on the bottle, I also did a few searches and saw alot of people complaining that Alclad's Gloss Black Base takes forever to fully dry if ever. (also heard that all of Alclad's primers are not particularly good, any truth to this?)

Also is it true the gloss black base is not actully a lacquer but an enamel? If so why doesn't it say so on the bottle? Knowing that it makes sense why it's recommended to wait 24 hours for it to fully dry.

Any advice on dealing with this particular brand of paint is definitely welcome. Thanks!

The best advice anyone can give you on the Alclad Black Base is to throw it in the trash and just use Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black.  The Alclad Black Base is notorious for being inconsistent with drying/curing times.  Some guys have been lucky enough to get a good bottle that only takes a few days, and some of us have been unlucky enough to get bad bottles that never dry.  Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black though is always consistent and fully cures in 24-48 hours.  If you want even more speed, MRP Super Gloss Black lacquer is also fantastic.  It fully cures in less than an hour.  Although its a controversial paint due to its toxicity, the MRP 2K black gives a smooth shine that none of the others can touch (you have to compare it to the other gloss blacks to see it).  It has a pretty serious time drawback though.  That stuff takes about 7 days to fully cure.

From what I recall Alclad black had drying issues several years ago but more recently it cures quickly. I had a bottle of the old stuff and it never fully dried. The replacement I bought dries very fast. I used it this morning and then shot chrome over it and the parts are totally dry a few hours later. More often than not I use Tamiya gloss black because it also dries within a few hours and provides a great under coat for Alclad.

I figure I'd report back. The gloss black dried well enough after about 2 days. I think you have to put it over a layer of regular primer though for it to adhere correctly to the model though. It seems tough enough. I'm scraping at it with my finger nail and pressing pretty hard against it and having a tough time scratching it at all. Seems like it just needs some time to properly dry. Still based on the horror stories I have read I'm looking for a different regular and gloss black primer to use for my projects.
