Taping over metal finishes
Posted by JacknewbIII on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 12:18 AM

It seems no matter what type of tape I use I pull some of the paint (not chunks just a faint amount) and it leaves streaks. If I coat it with gloss I tend to get some sticky residue left behind. Someone please tell me the secret recipe here. Thanks! Jack

Try removing stickiness from the tape by peeling it on and off a clean surface like the fridge or the stove, also I have used Post-it notes instead of tape for masking.

Clearcoat with AKs Intermediate Gauzy Agent Shine Enhancer, and mask with Tamiya masking sheets.  Every tape I have ever tried using either leaves residue or streaks of underlying paint that is now a slightly different sheen than what it was before the tape went on...or leaves the sticky residue you mentioned.  Whatever adhesive they use on the Tamiya masking sheets has eliminated that problem, so I don't even mess with tape anymore.  It sticks more reliably to irregular contours too.

These are the things I'm talking about:

I use Alclad.  While it dries to the touch in a few minutes, I leave it set for at least 12 hours before I put tape on it.

I don't clearcoat my Alclad.  Decals adhere very well to it so I don't feel the need for sealing

^^^^

Do you clear coat over the decals?  Any problems with edges lifting after a few years?
