AK Interactive Grey Primer issues.

Another vote for Mr. Surfacer here too.  I loved the stuff when I was using it.  Now I'm using Tamiya Surface Primer that I decant into a 4 ounce mason jar, whole cans at a time.  I get months of continuous use out of a single can.  As far as I can tell, Tamiya Surface Primer and Mr. Surfacer are pretty much the same stuff.  I had just switched over to the Tamiya back when Mr. Surfacer wasn't as easy for me to get my hands on, and have just stuck with it ever since.  I thin my Tamiya primer with MEK, so it latches onto the plastic with a death grip...makes that same eggshell smooth surface when airbrushed, and makes a surface that any paint I have tried latches onto it with a death grip.  If you make a big mistake on something, it can all be removed with some isopropyl alcohol and a cheap electric toothbrush so you can start over again if need be.  Just don't try using isopropyl alcohol as a thinner for it...that causes it to almost instantly take on a cottage-cheese-like consistency.

I have been trying different primers lately looking for that perfect one. Started with Vallejo, but it doesnt seem to really bond well with the plastic. Tried Stynylrez. This stuff is great for bonding to the plastic and the overcoats adhere great, however, it tip dries too easily and spews chunks after a minute or so of spraying. 

 

I just bought a 100ml bottle of AK Interactive Grey primer. Thought id give it a shot last night. Basically it came out the bottle with the consistency of chocolate syrop. I thinned it with water and tried spraying it. It came out like curdled milk. Cleaned and retried with Modelmaster acryl thinner, same if not worse. Then tried Tamiya thinner with similar results. I then gave up and used the Stynylrez again.

 

Any ideas what you can use to make AK's primer actually sprayable?

 

 

 

As to the Stynylrez I can think of a few things leading to your issue. Once a month or so it should be mixed with something like a badger battery powered mixer. You will never get that stuf completely mixed with a stick. But during the month after the complete mixing just shaking is good enough. I only use a mixing stick to see if there is glop on the bottom of the bottle which you will never see through that semi opaque plastic.  Then if not thinning use a large enough needle, .5 is good,.7 even better. Smaller than that and I thin it with hardware store lacquer thinner, the real stuff not the synthetic so called green friendly stuff. And finally shoot it between 23 and 25 psi. And truly finally, be sure to clean your airbrush immediately after using Stynylrez.

I use also Mr Primer Surfacer 1000, no issues what so ever. It's a bit different from Mr Surfacer in that it is pretty thin in the jar, you only thin it about 25% with Mr Leveling Thinner. Comes out egg shell smooth. But my Stynylrez is very smooth as well as long as I follow my own guide lines lol !

I spray Tamiya acrylics over it often.  No issue.

I can't say much about AK primer but I can tell you Mr Surfacer primer is a dream.  I thin it about 50/50 with their thinner and it's one of the great products on my bench.  Both the stuff in a jar and the rattle can are just wonderful.  I mostly use black but also grey, mahogany, and I think also white are available.
