Several good buys on Ebay on Whisper Jet compressors
Posted by MikeV on Saturday, April 24, 2004 1:08 AM
Go to Ebay and type in "Whisper Jet" in the search engine and you will find several slightly used Whisper Jet compressors for sale at unheard of prices. I would jump on one of these over the Sprint Jet's and others that most people buy under $200.

WOW! A great buy and lots of them too. I'd be jumping on the one of the deals but I already have a Whisper Jet II. I usually use my Silentaire 20A and keep the WJ II as a back up. WJ is about the size of my SA and is a first-class compressor. Not as quiet as Silentaire but VERY reasonably quiet. It is a sealed box with quieting to keep the noise down to a minimum. I could carry a phone conversation with WJ running. It is a heavy duty unit that would last. It would outlast a Campbell Hausefield ten times over.

The WJ has an square air tank located under the compressor motor, a square metal box. If I was looking for a compressor now I would seriously consider bidding on one of those.

Nice find, Mike!

roosterfish,

Would you say the Whisper Jets are better than the Iwata Sprint Jet's or was I too hasty with that opinion?
Since they used to sell for quit a bit of money I assumed they were much better than the cheaper sub $200 compressors that are out there.
Would you agree?
They are a piston compressor correct?

Mike, always pointing out the deals! The Spint Jet is a oiless piston compressor too. That is why it is much queiter than a diaphram unit.

Just trying to help out those looking for a good deal John. Wink [;)]

If I didn't have my Jun-Air I would buy two of these compressors and keep one for back-up.

I've never used a Sprint Jet. The Whispers were used quite extensively in airbrush studios. I remember in 1984 seeing whole banks of Whispers at Jostens. Jostens was the company the people that make, or made, the high school year books and, I think, class rings too. All the Whispers were operational and I didn't see any defective ones laying off to the side. That told me that the Whispers were reliable. But the workers still cooed like a loving pigeon whenever the name Silentaire (compressors) came up. They liked their Whispers but loved Silentaire because of how quiet it was.

Whisper is a oil-less piston compressor with lots of noise dampening material. It also is housed in a sealed box with holes for operating. They are built well. The motor is very heavy duty. If I had a pick with it then it would have been my wish that the air tank was .5 gallon bigger. I know the motor would handle a bigger tank.

All in all the Whispers are a quiet, work horse, compressor. Those Whispers selling at Ebay are a bargain.

Modify it and put a bigger tank mounted to the back side or something. Wink [;)]
I bought a 5 gallon tank from this company and used it for my 1/2 hp Jun-Air.
It works great. http://www.kmwperformance.com/prod.aspx?c=6

SO if you where to choose between a Sprint jey and Whisper jet you would choose WJ. The WJ would total around $80.

Look at the alternative compressors. What kind of compressor can you buy for $80? The Campbell Hausfield rickety Wal-Mart special that is noisey, has a motor hidden under a plastic box made to look like a bigger motor and of cheap construction? A diaphram compressor that sounds like a jack hammer and overheats? I believe compressor motors have 50% duty cycles. The Whisper runs for 20 seconds to build up air in the air tank and then rest at least 20 seconds. A diaphram compressor runs wide open for 20 minutes (your airbrush session), overheats, then cools for a long 20 minutes. That is a lot of stress for any motor/compressor and would not live a long life.

Look at the insides of the Whisper. That big gray cylinder is the motor. It is very big and heavy duty.

My Whisper has been 100% reliable. The Whisper is a good design. Those Whispers selling at Ebay are a bargain.

Do the whisper jets pulsate? Do you need to purchase an additional moisture trap for the ones listed? What about the air compressor kit mentioned in the description?

What happened to that auction? I do a search now for the Whisper Jet and there are none? Confused [%-)]
There was about 15 or so this morning. [:0]
The guy pulled them off.
I'll bet somebody offered him a price for them all and he took it.
That stinks!

It would have been such a good deal. Too bad Ebay allows the seller to get our hopes up and get a great deal then, I would guess, a snake buyer emails an offer and the seller can pull them all off the auction block.

The Whispers don't pulsate because they have an air tank for reserve.

Thanks MikeV for the heads-up on the auction.

Haha. Laugh [(-D]

Actually, the scenario that roosterfish mentioned is how I bought my Jun-Air. The guy had it on Ebay and I emailed him and asked if he would wave the shipping costs if I won the auction and picked it up in person. He said no problem and told me that if I wanted it for sure he would just cancel the auction and sell it to me outright for $150, so that's what I did. Big Smile [:D] Wink [;)]

Sorry that you guys weren't able to get one of those Whisper Jet's for the price he had them at.
What a bummer. Disapprove [V]

OH, yes, a seller can stop an auction at Ebay. But the seller must give a good reason for doing so and not just, "Someone gave me a good deal so I stopped the auction." The seller must say things like, "The item(s) was/were stolen (right, all 50 of them stolen), the item broke (yup, all 50 of them), they all exploded or some other whimpy excuse. I think there is even the generic excuse of, "Item is not available anymore."

What nice compressor they were...for a decent price.
