Tinting primer
Posted by glusnifr on Friday, April 7, 2023 5:42 PM

Started using Vallejo ModelAir acrylics.  I've masked off my canopy and am ready to paint. Of course, the first coat should be the interior color but the clear part can't be primed because the primer color will show inside the canopy rather than the interior color. Can I tint the primer to match the interior color?

Sure,I assume your going to tint it with the same type of paint the primer is.

Hi,

I would try a samll test batch first.  I recently wanted to tint some White Tamiya Surface Primer, so I mixed in some Red Tamiya Flat Acrylic, and it made a lumpy mess.  Interestingly though, when I mixed the Mr. Surfacer with some craft store Red Acrylic paint it came out fine, though I only used it for brush painting so I don't know what it would be like trying to airbrash with.

Do you have any Tamiya acrylic of the same colour as your interior?

I often use Tamiya acrylic thinned with Mr Color Levelling thinner AS the primer (& top coat).

I would also try to carefully sand the raised canopy frame a little to key it for airbrushing.

You could always mask the inside of the canopy as well and primer and paint that.  The other option is to switch to a lacquer paint, which will do a pretty good job etching the clear plastic on its own so the paint will hold onto it without priming.  If the primer you're using is Vallejo, you might want to look around on this and other forums about what other modelers have been saying about it.  As I recall, the experiences with that primer have been mostly negative.
