Tamiya XF-21 flat base

For many years, I get the best clear coat from mixing Future Floor Care liquid with 1/4 to 1/3 Tamiya XF-21 flat base. I just found out that Future had been off the market for many years. Some old bottle on e-bay are being sold at radicularly high price. Is there a suitable replacement for Future? Is Pledge Floor Cleaner safe with plastic?

Future sort of turned into Pledge Floor Care under a couple of different names made by Johnson, then that too went off the market as well. The rumor is Quick Shine is a product that behaves very similarly. I've never tried it so maybe someone else here has.

Being a floor cover, Future is very durable and will not yellow. Yet at the same time, it is very gentle to model plastic. I am surprised that not enough test were done by modelers to come up with an recommendation.

By now it could very well be that some modelers have tested it. I haven't since I still have Pledge but that doesn't mean nobody has. Some here may be along to better answer your question. You could also try youtube and try over in the Model Cars Magazine forums ( I think that may be where I first saw any info on Quick Shine)..

I can tell you that Amazon and Home Depot both sell Quick Shine.

I might respectfully suggest it's been just a few hours on what for many is likely a workday. "Patience, Grasshopper...." Big Smile

I used to use a mix of Tamiya's regular Flat finish and ('original') Future to get the semi-gloss/eggshell finish particularly common to WW2 Luftwaffe a/c. Going for the same reflectance with Future and Flat Base produced a grainier, almost chalky finish...so I steered clear of it thereafter.

Maybe I just got a bad bottle. Confused

Cheers

Greg

Quick Shine seems to be the recommendation by many car modelers.

Ya, it's the only product I've personally heard of and somewhat catching on in rising to the surface within the wake of Pledge/Future.
