you can get away with washing your model with mineral spirits as it is not as harsh. i've gotten away with it a couple of times but you will be taking a chance every time. i also use mineral spirits to thin my wash paint to run the panel lines. you just have to wipe the excess very gently and keep the wiping to a minimum. later.

....Does anyone know of a way of using Testors enamels as a wash, over a base coat of Testors enamels, without having to put a flat coat over the basecoat without disturbing it?
or is that the only way. Or, can you use something besides a lacquer thinner to wash it with that wont disturb the enamel basecoat?
