Spray Booths
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 20, 2004 10:49 AM
Dear Modelling Experts,

I am looking to buy a spray booth in order to start building and air brushing with enamels, a number of kits that I have amassed over the years, during a long break from any type of modelling activities.

I have been on the net and am totally confused as to what is good and what is cost effective in terms of what the product offers. I have seen one ( 1 ) product that I am interested in which is listed below:

24" Mini Booth
148 CFM Shaded Pole Exhaust Fan
115 volt - 1.37 amp - 3,160 RPM
26 Gage Galvanized Sheet Metal Construction
4" Collar to Exhaust to Outside, up to 15 feet
75 watt Light Bulb (Standard)
Exhaust Fan and Light Switch
24" X 12" X 1" High Capacity Pleated Air Filter
Made in the U.S.A. by Pace Enterprises
Price: $USD325.00

I have attempted to contact the above company, but no responce as yet. Would like to know whether the above is a good product to invest in and whether there are any alternatives out there should I be unsuccessful with the above.

Please note that I reside in Australia.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Nick

Welcome back to the hobby. I know what it's like to leave and come back, I've done that many times myself.

Your description doesn't say how big it is other than it's 24" wide. If you are building 1/32 models 24" is going to be very marginal. The F-105 I'm building right now is 24" long. Depth is important as well since you will have to turn the model to paint all sides of it.

There have been numerous posts in this forum pertaining to spray booths. Lots of people are building themselves. If you are so inclinde you might wans to search this forum for spray booth and / or exhaust fan and see what turns up.

Apologies.

Dimensions are 24" wide, 18" Long and 18" high but come to think of it you may be right.

Although I have several smaller kits the two large kits are the Academy Delux Titanic 1/350 and the Tamiya 1/32 Grumman F14 Tomcat.

The option of making my own booth doesn't really appeal to me, but the company that I mentioned on my last post also has a 36" version as follows:

[1] Powerful 265 CFM Shaded Pole Exhaust Fan
[2] Solid State Variable Speed Fan Control
(Exhaust control range from 265cfm to 75cfm)
[3] Two 115 Volt Switched Outlets
[4] Light Switch for Built-in Light Bulbs
[5] Two 75 watt Light Bulbs (Standard)
[6] 115 Volt 3-Prong Grounded Power Cord
[7] 34" X 10" Extended Work Area
Eight Ball [8] One 18" X 12" X 1" High Capacity Pleated Air Filter
[9] All 26 Gage Galvanized Sheet Metal Construction
Made in the U.S.A. by Pace Enterprises
36" Deluxe - $395.00

36" Long, 20" High and 20" Deep with additional 10" Bench

Website: http://www.pacepaintbooths.com/pace/

Could someone take a peek and advise as to whether this is a good buy in comparison to the others already mentioned on this website. I dont mind paying the $$$ provided that what I get is of top quality.

Thanks again.

there's one on aircraft resource center (www.aircraftresourcecenter.com) and it's just made up of a large box, with a hole cut into it, a 6 inch diameter hose, a bathroom fan, and a filter. cost him about 60 bucks

As long as you're going to be sending the exhaust outside, the system you're looking at seems OK.

If this one doesn't work out for you, you may want to look at the Artograph systems. I have an Artograph 1520, though the 1530 may be more suited towards your needs. These systems have about the same or slightly higher initial investment, and will also cost longer in the long run because you have to buy the filters from an Artograph distributor (if anybody knows a hardware store/generic equivalent, please tell me). The advantage to the Artograph system is that the final filter has some carbon in it to absorb some of the solvents, so venting outside isn't absolutely necessary (supposedly).

Note that the 1520 normally comes with a cardboard hood; a metal hood is available separately.

The 1530 appears to come with a metal hood; a review is here:

Dennick,

I was just getting ready to order a Artograph spray booth when I noticed your post. Checked out the link and was impressed with what I saw. I actually was able to reach Bob and he answered some of my questions. The Artograph that I was considering was about $369.00 and measures approx 30" X 15". It doesn't have the lights, variable speed switch for the fan or the extra outlets. The unit from Pace uses standard furnace filters and must be vented outside. The filters for the Artograph are real expensive.

Bob told me that the shipping charges to Illinois would be about $25.00 with another $15.00 packing fee. Based on the photo's, the booths look like good quality workmanship.

I have been looking around and there are really not a lot of choices. You have Pasche which is similiar but smaller. The pasche doesn't have the lights, variable speed switch or outlets. The next choice would be the Artograph which is a tad smaller but you don't have to vent it outside. Artograph makes a quality product but one again, the cost of the filters is real scary.

I guess now I am leaning towards one of these Pace booths. I will kick the idea around for a couple of days. I hope someone out there who has one can respond with their thoughts. Hope this helps ya!!!
