air compressor question
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 3, 2004 2:31 PM
I bought the cambel hausfield quiet air air compressor, my question is during the breaking in procedure that it talks about in the manual it says that you turn the regulator nob counterclockwise and let the air build up until it shuts off. I can watch the air pressor gauge move up until it shuts off, but the regulator gauge never moves. even when I turn the regulator knob all the way on it never moves. does this mean that the gauge is bad or do I need to wait for my airbrush to arrive and hook it up. When I first bought it I didn't know it had a regulator and bought another one. I don't know too much about air compressors. Thanks ahead of time for any advice given Other than that I really like the compressor.

When you turn the regulator knob clockwise with air in the tank does any air come out of the regulator? If it does then it is working. Try holding your finger over the regulator outlet where the airbrush connects to it and then turn the regulator and see if the gauge moves up. You must have some back pressure in order for the gauge to move up I believe.

Some compressors have a valve on the outlet to turn the airflow off completely. If the tank pressure gauge is mounted on the tank and it is showing pressure normally this may be the case with yours. Look for a lever or valve on the line that comes out of the tank and make sure it is on so air can flow to the regulator section.

If you have nothing at all connected to the outlet, not even a quick-disconnect fitting, then air should be blowing out the whole time the motor is running since there is nothing to stop it. This is another indication that there may be a valve on yours.

Mike has hit the nail on the head. That compressor will turn the air off to the regulator when turned all the way counter clockwise.

Once the pressure builds in the tank then turn the knob clockwise. The knob should feel like it is tightening up a little and the air should start to flow out.

Hope this helps.

MusicCity is most likely right. I have a compressor which has a shutoff valve between the tank and the the regulator if this is shut off the output pressre gauge will show no pressure . I have another one which has a shutoff valve in the output line [ after both tank pressure and output pressure gauges] In this one both gauges read at the same time. One gauge showing tank pressure and the other gauge, working pressure. You very likely have one with a shutoff at the tank outlet. In most cases with this type, the tank gauge will be mounted on the tank and the working pressure gauge in the output line.

ok here is the problem...I have the CH compressor your talking about. The compressor has 2 guages on it . The smaller one on the left is how much air is in the tank (using laymans explanation here since cheech is new to this). The bigger guage on the right is how strong the air is being allowed to come out of the tank. The knob is connected to the bigger guage.

So we know your tank is filling and the motor is turning off at 100lbs of air in the tank which means your knob is closed down all the way. If you turn the knob and no air comes out of the pipe on the right side of the big guage then the Regulator valve is broken. Don't try to fix it with the second regulator you bought. The CH regulators can't be replaced . Return the Compressor and the second regulator and get another air compressor. If not another CH then try sears or home depot. Both carry good compressors also.
