On airbrushes.
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 8, 2004 11:54 AM
Right now I have a dual action piece of Censored [censored] aztek airbrush and was wandering what airbrush would be good for someone starting out in airbrushing. Money is a subject depending on how much we are talking about. I mostly do aircraft models, but also dabble in armor and autos. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd recommend that you look at the Badger (or Thayer and Chandler since they are also made by Badger) or the Iwata double-action airbrushes. These are all fine quality brushes that will give you excellent service.

The Badgers appropriate for modelling will run you around $50 to $100 and the Iwata probably $100 to $150 (I'm not real familiar with Iwatas). Prices will vary depending on the model and where you get it, obviously. My Omni 4000 cost $60 from Dixie Art Supply and it will do anything that I want. I already had hoses and a compressor though.

The fact that you are just starting out in airbrushing doesn't mean anything. Get one now that you can learn to use and get the results you need. Don't buy a "Beginner's" brush now and then in 6 months wish you had something better. Get a good quality double action and you'll never be sorry. Get a cheap one and you'll be sorry every time you use it.

if it were me and i knew what i know now, i'd save my money for the iwata hp-cs friend. you won't be disappointed. it cost about $105 at dixieart, however, i hear the hp-cr is a fine airbrush though i've never used one and is priced at around 60 bucks at dixieart.com. later.

It's not that they don't have to, it is that they won't because they are too cheap!

Chris,

Actually the excavator has a shear on it and I am cutting up scrap pipe. Wink [;)]
I was joking about the HP-CS but if I decide to sell it I will let you know.
The Sotar 2020 with the medium tip/needle handles MM Acryl very well.
I don't think the fine tip/needle would work real well though.

Alrighty then. Its been awhile since I posted this. First I would like to make a correction. I got the HP-CR revolution instead of the CS as I had posted. Now for the bigger subject. I have a bigger problem , I have a airbrush and no line.Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead] Stupid me. Even though i dont have a line right now. I have two air compressors, a testors compressor and a big industrial (ok not that big of a compressor, but it has wheels to move it around LOL) from SEARS. My question is which one should i use?

Bryan, if you don't have a problem using you larger compressor, i would use it. i use a 2hp "companion" from sears with 7 gallon tank. it stays parked under my carport and i can barely hear it kick on from my workbench. i just routed a hose from the compressor through a tiny hole beside my door, and the hose connects into my regulator/airfilter into my moisture trap, out to my airbrush. works great. if you can't do something like that, then i'd use the testors. later.

I remember running across a 7 gallon Companion compressor. That compressor almost made me go ahead & buy an oilless... 7 gallons for $150! It was tempting. I understand the logic in using that thing. I guess with 7 gallons, it doesn't kick on often when doing modeling airbrush duty. It seems like the oilless ones that come from Sears are the ones people have the least trouble with. If you read usenet, people are complaining about every oilless out there except ones that come from Sears. Even on this forum we have Chris & Mikev saying good things about their Sears oilless compressors. My dad's 4 gallon Craftsman pancake has amazed us all with how long it has lasted in the remodeling business.

I bought an oiled one for $180. I love it so far. I'll be talking more about it soon.

I also use an Iwata Eclipse gravity feed. I'm perfectly happy with it functionally, but it is $40 overpriced.

David,

The Sears oil filled one is supposed to last a lifetime according to my buddy who has been airbrushing automotive and motorcycle artwork for 40 years.
They are a little expensive at $399.99 but well worth it in the long run.
It is a 6 hp 25 gallon tank. Wink [;)]

Oh yeah I'd be having about 280% confidence in a 6 hp 25 gallon oiled Craftsman, but I only needed about 125% confidence for $180 Thumbs Up [tup]

i have 2 emglo compressors, one that has a single tire and is moved "wheelbarrow" style. i use this one for framing houses as it is capable of keeping up to 4 nail guns operating vigorously, it recovers in about 12 seconds and is very, very quiet for a 5 horse motor. it uses oil and has two 4 gallon cylinder tanks. the other model uses oil too and has 2 two gallon cylinder tanks stacked on top of one another, recovers in 9 seconds, and is moved using a handle which is welded to the frame, i use it for running smaller tools like pin guns, brad nailer, and trim staplers. i figured i'd buy the companion incase one of these went down, or just needed something around the house for tires and such. i caught it on sale at Sears for $123 or there abouts. i couldn't resist.

BTW, i use the iwata hp-cs as well, and its smooth trigger action and fine atomization of paint made the $40 overpricing melt away with the first session!!!LOL. i have several airbrushes, but the hp-cs is my workhorse, all around airbrush of choice. later.
