Air Tanks without compressor attached
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 10, 2004 9:41 PM
Rather than spending $100 dollars plus on a compressor with tank like I had originally planned, I think I'm going to just buy a 10 gallon air tank for $30 without an air compressor already attached. Then, I will be able to use the air compressor I already have for inflating car tires to inflate the tank. A 10 gallon tank with a 125 PSI should provide more than enough air for airbrushing as well as the fact that it'll save me about $70.

Does anybody advice against this? Does anybody use a setup similar to this?

Looking at the air tank, it appears it does not have a 1/4" or 3/8" connection on the top. Rather it uses the connection found on car tires. I went to Home Depot today and couldn't find an adapter between between the car tire connection and a 1/4" or 3/8" hose. But, I think I can solve this problem by buying the Tire Chuck Adapter from Dixie Art (found at: http://www.dixieart.com/Hoses.html ). Then, I will be able to rig up a regular air hose, moisture trap and pressure regulator. Will using this Tire Chuck Adapter work? ( I hope this last part made sense but I'll be running to Lowe's tomorrow and will hopefully be able to answer this myself)

It's hard to tell from the pitcure on Dixie Art's web site but that adapter appears to go from the tire valve size to 1/4" NPT If that's the case, it should work fine. However, you won't save the whole $70. $30 for the tank, $20 for a regulator, $4 for an adapter, plus a little shipping cost brings the total up to around $55.

If you already have a compressor for inflating tires, why don't you just use that for airbrushing? All you need for an airbrush is about 15 psi so if your compressor will get a tank up to 125 it will certainly work for airbrushing.
