Micron or Sotar?

and if you do buy the micron, remember to buy an extra tip and needle. the tips cost almost $100 and you have to send the airbrush in to get it done.

This question was asked in an other airbrush forum and this is what I post. 'Like comparing a Ford or a Chevy. It is a matter of opinion , I have both and I really don't think one is better than the other as far as spray quality and detail you can achieve but you may like how one feels in your hand better than the other and that makes a difference.' You are going to have great difficulties trying to spray model paints through a .23mmor .18mm nozzle that the microns have. I'm not saying it can't be done just more trouble than it is worth. You can get the Sotar with a medium head assembly and needle that will work fine but I don't think you will notice much of a difference from the 100g you already have. Here is a tip for you that works well for most airbrushes and may have been mentioned on here before. You can take a small amount of polishing compound and polish your needle with it and put it on the tip of the needle and gently spin the needle in the nozzle. This will match you needle and nozzle together and give a little bit better spray.

I would say no it isn't worth twice the price, but as I said earlier that is a personal choice.

I want to use either one for modelling, but also for doing illustration. I have a badger 100g, which is great, but I want to know if it would be worth getting either a sotar or micron for even greater detail. I was wondering if the micron was worth spending so much more than the sotar. It's more than twice as expensive.

That is a personal choice really but from a few that have commented on this forum such as John, and people I know who have used both, the Sotar sprays a little finer. You do of course have to have very fine pigmented paint to flow through these airbrushes with the fine tip/needle in them as they are small openings. I have the Sotar with a medium tip/needle on it and it sprays great for most anything I would want to do with it.
