Airbrushing with templates!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 9, 2004 8:28 PM
Greetings!

I just received Verlinden's German 1/35 scale numbers and crosses templates from Squadron. After fiddling with them for quite some time this weekend I still have no success. Should the paint mixture be a bit thicker than usual? How about the air pressure? Higher? Lower? All of my test runs end up looking....well.....just that, runny. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ryan

I would lower pressure down below 10psi for that

If the templates actually stick to the surface of the model so the edges seal I think I'd try it with thinner paint, lower pressure, and several thin coats. Thin paint runs easily, especially at higher pressures so take it easy.

If they don't stick to the surface and just sort of lay there, I'm not real sure how to do it. I'd probably try tracing them on Frisket or something and cutting out something that sticks to the surface.

They are made of metal and do not adhere to the surface. The instructions say to secure them to the surface using masking tape but that is all but impossible when the flat surface area to be painted is limited to say the least. I will try to trace them out on masking tape, cut out the design and transfer the tape to the model. A buddy of mine told me to thicken the paint a tad and to use many light coats. I will let you guys know what happens.

Don't know what to tell you, Ryan. I've never used them so I'm at a loss. Perhaps double-sided Scotch tape might work. Anything you put under them is going to lift them off the surface and allow a slightly soft edge, but double stick tape is pretty thin. Wish I could be more help.
