Paint compatibility
Posted by Albion on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 8:33 AM
I went to the local model shop at the weekend to buy some Brilliant Blue spray for the nose of my Mustang to find that they don't actually stock the spray paints. Angry [:(!] So, i'm wondering if I can use enamel, or tamiya acrylics, over the top of the AS12 Bare metal silver I painted the whole model with. On the Tamiya website it says you can paint enamel or acrylic on top of the normal sprays, the TS ones, but doesn't say anything about the AS bare metal one. Is there any difference?
Thanks in advance.

HEY,
I would guess that as long as the paint is completely cured, you shouldnt have a problem, but im not sure.

Darren,

In general, as long as each coat of paint is completely cured, you can paint any type of paint over another type without problems. Problems will occur if the underlying paint is not completely cured. There are many factors affecting your paint's cure time: How thickly the coats applied, the precise solvents in the paint, the relative humidity during drying, etc.

If you're really concerned and the area of AS bare metal is completely cured, you could overcoat this area with a coat of Future or clear gloss. This will place an additional layer between the blue you will be applying and the base silver to help prevent any reaction between the two paints. If you do this, allow at least 48 hours (depending on your application method and environment) before putting the blue overcoat on the model and you should be fine.

Enjoy your modeling...

Jeff's right we have no Future here, hang on that doesn't read right!

It's called Johnsons Kleer over here, Tesco sell it, and it would act as a barrier coat. It costs about £2.50 for 500ml.
