Enamel Primer and Acrylic paint.....also airbrush question
Posted by KevinCollins on Monday, August 23, 2004 2:29 PM
Hi,

I just primer a tank with Testors gray primer (enamel) and now I want to airbrush with acrylics....will this be a problem (mixing the paint types)??? The primer has been on the model for about 3 days now....

Also I'm "crossing over the line" and I'm going to use my airbrush for the first time on this model (Italeri Panther Ausf. A)...what ratio should mix my paint- Isopropyl alcohol to......50/50??? Does it matter if I pour paint in the mixing bottle first or does alcohol go first.....(on some items it does make a difference)....do I add a drop of dish soap or not???

ThanksSmile [:)]

As long as the primer has cured, which it should have in 3 days, you shouldn't have any problem. You didn't say what acrylic your'e using, so thinning ratio is hard to guess at. I usually don't go over 2 paint to 1 thinner. I add thinner to the paint, but I suppose it doesn't matter. Don't know your paint but I never use dish soap in an AB mix.

Hi Rick,

I was going to use Testors/MM Acylics......I think I saw the soap idea on a "wash" question...I wasn't sure if the same idea applied to the AB mix.....thanks

No problem on all counts.

I use Testors light grey spray enamel for a primer and paint with Testors MM Acryl paints for the top coat. Just make sure the enamel is fully cured (your 3 days should be fine, but if you have any doubt, wait another day or two).

I put a drop of dish soap in a new bottle of Acryl, it seems to help.

As for thinning, I hardly thin at all. I use the MM Acryl thinner, but I only end up putting a few drops in my airbrush bottle.

-Drew

Kevin,

Acrylics dry so fast as they are that using straight alcohol to thin them is asking for more problems. I usually use half isopropyl alcohol and half filtered water although I am going to start trying just filtered water to see how it works.
For general coverage you can spray them straight out of the bottle, but for finer lines you will need to thin it. I thin it 2:1 and it always works fairly well.
You should also pick up some retarder to slow the paint drying time down a bit, so that tip-dry becomes less of a problem. Some Badger Needle Juice or Medea Super Lube for the needle would also be a good idea.

Distilled water should work fine as a thinner.
Give it a try at 2:1 (paint to thinner) and shoot it on a scrap piece of plastic or a piece of metal, etc to see how it looks. Spray a light misting coat first to give you a base and then after a couple minutes give it another coat or two.
