Guys, Please Help Us Out!
Posted by MusicCity on Sunday, September 5, 2004 11:33 AM
I don't want to sound like a grouch or anything, but could you guys PLEASE help us out a little bit. We are more than happy to answer any question that we are able to answer, and will provide all the information that we can. We wouldn't hang out here if we didn't enjoy helping people out. But, answering the same questions over and over and over again get a little bit tedious.

Last week I answered a post, moved on to the next one, went back to the first and cut what I had written and pasted it into the second post. They were the SAME question right next to each other in the post list.

We get the "What Airbrush Is Best" / "What Airbrush Is Right For Me " / How Much Do I Thin Paint" / "What Compressor Do I Need" / "Enamel vs. Acrylic" posts at least once a week. Nobody would have to look through more than a few pages to find the answers to those questions. Additionally, the search function would pull up more answers to them than most people would care to read.

Don'g get me wrong, we don't mind answering them, but it does get tedious. Please help us out and see if your question has already been posted myriad times before asking. Thank you very much!

Couldn't agree more. Just one suggestion: Get the sticky updated. Foster made a great post in the Acrylics vs Enamels thread just a couple days ago that I think deserves to be put there. In addition, get some links in the sticky, as well; Swanny's modeling site comes to mind as one of the best. There are others also. This would help a lot of folks coming in here for the first time, and even some of us (me) old tooters who like (or need) to have a place where we can get info on a "one-stop-shopping" basis.

My two pennies.

but for new comers, most don't know what a "sticky" is, i know i didn't understand them for the longest. maybe i'm just a dumb redneck from LA!!LOL i too grow weary of typing the same words over and over, especially to questions that are so open ended.........best airbrush.............no such thing..............best paint.............no such thing...........best thinning ratio................no such thing..............its all personal preference items that are always debatable. later.

Scott,
I'll probably come off sounding like an old "I remember when the internet was black and orange (or green-- the display colors on the old VT-100s I used back in the 80's)" fart, but your very sensible suggestion actually used to be part of forum/newsgroup etiquette in part because of bandwidth limitations. In those days, in some groups, posting a question that had already been answered could lead to some serious flames.

Yeah, I remember them to. VT-52, VT-100, Heath-Zenith, Televideo, etc. I thought I was in heaven when I finally got an amber VT-220.

I guess that's also why it tends to get under my skin a bit. I well remember the flames from posting duplicates on newsgroups. It's not as big an issue these days with the bandwidth and storage that we now have, but at the same time the search facilities we have are far better than what was available then to.

Like I said, I don't want to come off sounding like a grouch, but when the answer to a question is just a couple of posts down that tells me that people aren't even bothering to look first.

I'm guilty as charged too... partly because not only being new to modelling (well, a retread) but to the forum too. I've learned a lot in the short time I have been here tho, not only about modeling but where to look for stuff here...

I think simple redirection when the questions are asked might be a good start. Someone asks what's the diff between acryilic and enamel... Instead of telling your feel on the subject, let em know "Go to the top topic in the painting forum, "FAQ: Painting and airbrushing" ... maybe the other three peope with the urge to post that same thing will go too... BEFORE they post their question... Then if they come back and say "My question wasn't answered, what I wanted to know was "X"" then it's a legit question....

Just my My 2 cents [2c].

And thanks to all you oh-so-knowledgable ones who help me and the others out!!!!! Bow [bow]

Oh yeah, I remember the internet like that too... when there were no back buttons, no home page... just telnet, gopher, ftp etc... and finding a website was like an FBI investigation.. you had to DIG.

So am I. I've posted questions that could have been answered if I had bothered to search. It isn't the unusual questions, the ones that get asked once a year, but the ones that get asked every few days.

Good point, and that is done sometimes. I just hate to be rude and tell someone to look it up or go to this post, so I try and answer the question.

Yeah, Mike and Rick and Richard and all the rest, my thanks as well!

yeah I do too... maybe a "well I prefer acrylic (or enamel) because ______, but if you read the FAQ in such and such place you might be able to make a better decision than by my opinion...

Think I am gonna use it for paint scheme questions... "It appears the G-69 Floozy used a hooker pink and passion purple camo scheme, I found a few good pics on google, just type in "floozy" on google images and check it out"

I'd feel better about it not appearing rude, and be able to turn them on to a whole new technique of research...
