IPMS Paint chart discrepancy
Posted by Bones-coa on Monday, September 6, 2004 12:20 AM
Modelers, this is in no way meant to be disrespectable to those who created the FS conversion charts on the IPMS website.

While putting together my own databse, I found quite a few errors in the chart. None of any great consqunce as most appear to have just been typos. However, in comparing to another chart at the following site (http://www.airmodel.sk/indns_eng.html), I found some discrpancies bettwen them. For example, IPMS lists Tamiya XF14 J.A Grey as FS34417, while the other site shows it as FS36495. I saw the same thing with XF9 as well as XF10. Are these also typos on someone's part? I'm not sure who to believe as I can't prove either wrong since I don't know how either derirved at those FS numbers. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I've noticed things like that to. I think it boils down to someone's interpretation of what is "Close Enough" or trying to fit a particular line of paints into the FS Scheme (it isn't this color so it must be that one). I recently got some Model Master 1733 which is listed on one site as being FS-36622 but it isn't even close.

When you get your database done, I'd love to see it. It would be nice to have one that can be trusted.

Thanks, Scott. I'm doing mine in MS Excel. The problem with those that are out there is, not only are thye not complete, but they are seperate. Mine will be in Excel and will cross over to as many brands as I can come up with. It's basically just going to be the other charts and conversions that do exist together in one. However, these discrepancies are causing me a problem. I was not planning on second guessing or doubting anyone else work, just trying to put it all together in a nice, neat package. Now, I'm not sure what to do and who to go with.

I understand your pain. It's bad when you find out the things you trusted can't be trusted. Stupid me, I bought that MM paint, blew my cockpit, and THEN realized that the color was all wrong. I thought it was right at first and the more I looked at it, the more wrong it became.

IPMS has "Color Chips" of the standard colors. My recommendation would be to get those that you have questions about, open them in some graphics software and see what the RGB color is, then compare that to the colors on the manufacturers sites. Don't trust your monitor, it will lie to you! The RGB mix should be right though.

If you put yours on a web site, send me a link so I can add it to my links page. If you don't have a site, I'll post it on mine (with credit to you, of course).
