Sure, as long as the airbrush thinner is an acrylic thinner. Just mix your paint/thinner to the consistency of coffee and have at it.
You can also use 70% isopropyl alcohol (a.k.a. rubbing alcohol), plain or distilled water (with a drop of dishwashing liquid to break up the surface tension), and even windshield washer fluid.
Just my opinion, but I think an alcohol-based thinner would tend to work best; for me, it tends to flow better and dry a little faster.
