Tamiya Flat Base [X-21]??
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 4, 2003 2:58 PM
Could anyone please enlighten me as to what this is for... I tried to use it as a Matt Varnish and subsequently turned my Spitfires wing White[:0]

A quick wash under water removed it but I would really appreciate some info on this.

TIA

From what I gather, that product is for mixing into gloss or semi gloss paints in the Tamiya range to make them flat when you paint them on.

I generally stay away from Tamiya paint, but from those I know who use it, it's not uncommon for people to mistake the product for a straight flat varnish and have similar problems that you had.

I've never used it, but I've read the instructions....It is for mixing in with Tamiya gloss paints to make them flat, I'd rather buy matt paints to begin with (hence never having used it).

Both upnorth and nzgunnie have this one nailed. It is not to be used as a matt finish, try Testor's dull-cote, I've used it for years with no problems. Just make sure that you don't put it on too thick.

Im pretty sure flat base x-21 is to be used by mixing it with another colour, not as coat. :)

Andy, try mixing some of the flat-base with Future. I've had pretty good success mixing about 20% X-21 with 80% Future. This gives a pretty good flat finish. Make sure to try it on a test piece before applying to your masterpiece...

The Pollyscale stuff is Great.
But if you can find it, try Model Master Acryil Clear Flat.

I've tried to mix Future ( Klear here in England ) with Tamiya Flat base X-21 and it didn't work. I don't know if I mixed the right proportions or if the Klear isn't working properly. It doesn't seem to give a good bright sheen when applied on his own (even after several coats). It's an old bottle, maybe I should get a new one.

Have a good modelling ! Smile [:)]

you need to mix it with tamiya gloss or future 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 gloss to clear ratio depending on the desired sheen. you need to experiment for waht is best for you.
