I prefer to lay down Future or the old Aussie equivalent called Super Stride (not sold here anymore) with a flat wide brush. I apply thin coats and build up the degree of gloss until I am happy with the results. The Airfix 1:72 DH-88 Comet Racer below has 14 coats on it. It is as glossy as a car model finish

wow... and that's one nice aircraft too! I've not seen that it here but it might go on my 'for the future' list... very sharo indeed!

Unless you can get an older kit, treat this one as a putty monster!
There is no cockpit bar a blanked off area and pilot heads (this is 50's vintage airfix) BUT Heritage aviation have a series of decals and resin upgrades for it. The cockpit set is rather nice and coupled with a vacc canopy from the same source would look fantastic!
However, with all the work to be done it builds up really well and in bright colours looks fantastic. Worth building IMHO!!
