What Can I Use Instead of Testors Dullcoat?

Try Polly Scale Clear Flat. It's an acrylic & works very well. I used Dullcote for years, but have now switched to Polly Scale & am very satisfied with the results.

You can use Gunze Sangyo Hobby Color Acrylic Clear Flat or Polly Scale Acrylic Clear Flat. Both products are water-based acrylics and won't affect decals or paint if laid on too thick, and a lot safer to use, too. Thin them with acrylic thinner such as Tamiya's X-20A thinner. I've personally used Gunze Flat and had good results.

You can also use a mixture of Tamiya Acrylic Flat Base and Future floor polish. For a complete discussion of the mixing ratios, head on to Swanny's site:

So is dullcoat the same thing as a flat paint? And, does dull coat actually dull the paint?

I like Gunze-Sangyo Aqueous flat clear.

Yes. Dullcoat is a lacquer-based, flat clear that dulls the finish of the model.
The Polly Scale and Model Master Acryl that was mentioned do the same thing except they are acrylic-based.

And they sure as heck smell alot better than Testors Dullcoat!

just bear in mind that testors dullcote is good to preserve your model. since its laquer based, a drop of water that was contaminated with a tiny bit of isoprop alcohol wont do nuts to it, but if you let anything touch say gunze flat it will just take the flat rigth off. i use gunze flat and it isnt fantastic. but as was said earlier, it is less toxic than dullcote. alot less.

Pollyscale flat is about the nicest flat clear on the market!

Easy to apply and thins with distilled water...

Recommended!!

I'm different. I go around the corner to Michael's Arts & Crafts store and pick up a large 11 oz. can of Krylon Matte Finish. The can advertises the the spray, "Eliminates Glossy Sheen, Creates a Soft, Satin Finish.

The can only costs a couple of $$, I get a lot, and it works as good as any other small, expensive, can labeled for modelers.
