Paint color help for Phantom

Geez, thanks for all the help. I REALLY appreciate it. Anyway, I paid a visit to Willis Hobbies, (my LHS) and blew 90 bucks on a 1/72 scale fw-190 a8, a 1/32 scale hawker hunter and of course, the phantom. IU checked the box and it is a standard SEA scheme. Thanks a lot. That link is great Music, and the diagrams are really nice warlock. thanks.

That's pretty interesting, Paul. I hadn't seen that. Actually if you look there are really only two variations of the top side. The "Wraparound" topsides are the same as those with the gray bottoms. I also noticed that he called for FS-34102 whereas Trumpeter called for FS-34079. Not sure what the difference between the two is.

Not just the colors, but the patterns. They are the same on all the planes, and they appear to be the same patterns as on that link you provided. All of the photos were taken by Don Logan who was a Phantom WSO during Viet Nam. I would say that the camo on the link you showed is most definitely a SEA camo scheme.

What I'm wondering is this, is thaat evenm the SEA scheme? It looks as though it could be one of those positioned up in Germany.

I just finished the Tamiya F-4E if that's of any help, and I've also built Trumpeter's F-105 (finished in SEA camo).

Tamiya shows:
AS-13 - Green
AS-15 - Olive Green
AS-15 - Tan
AS-16 - Light Gray (bottom)

Trumpeter shows:
FS-34087 - Olive Green
FS-34079 - Dark Green
FS-30219 - Tan
FS-36622 - Light Gray (bottom)

Edit ... I Forgot to mention that I used the same paint for both models. I used MM acrylics for the green, PolyScale for the tan, and Tamiya for the gray. Crazy mix I know, but it's what the LHS had. Also, pix of both finished models are on my web site. The F-105 looks a little darker in the photos than it really is but the F-4 looks about right.

OK cool. Actually i thought this tan looked closer to what the Israeli Air force uses. hmmm....

I used to work on Phantoms and they varied alot due to fading etc. When they were freshly painted, the tan was pretty dark like Tamiya's Flat Earth or MM Dark Tan. After sun bleaching the tan got very light so just like the others said -what looks best to you is correct.

I just build it like I like it, or paint in this case... within reason of course... like some of us were talking in another post.. who said there really WASN'T one in that shade of tan?

They could be virtually ANY shade of tan / green / gray and be correct. Depends on how long they had been sitting in the sun and fading. If you like it light, paint it light. The one I just finished is a little darker than that, but not a whole lot.

Thanks again. My little purple star looks so puny compared to 5 big red stars. sigh. lol. But thanks for the help. However to my inexperienced eye, I like the lighter tan better than the dark tan. Maybe I'll give accuracy a shove and lighten up the tan a bit. Then a again, maybe not. Well, thanks again again.

Maybe the person who built it used the wrong color?

I think it's just a light photo. It should be the standard SEA colors.
