Paasche VL
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 31, 2004 1:17 AM
G'day
I am getting back into scale armor after a few years absent. I have a paasche vl that I bought as a kid. Can anyone give me some tips on getting the best out of it.
Cheers

I'm not familiar with the VL, but the key to successful modeling with any airbrush is: Thin paint, low pressure, lots and lots of practice.

Using thin paint at low pressure will limit the overspray. Practice is, of course, the key to everything. Thin your paint around 3:1 for starters (some experienced people prefer 2:1) and try about 15 psi of pressure. Spray from about 3" from the surface. For really detailed painting, such as the demarcation between camo colors, go to about 1:1 thinning and 10 psi or lower on the pressure, the spray as close as you can get without splatters.

I think you would have a real tough time getting a VL to spray reliably at 10 psi and lower. Wink [;)]

While the VL is a great airbrush, Mike is right. I can only shoot very thinned paints at 15 lbs with my VL. Most of the time I will be 20 lbs+ with 3-1 to 2-1 ratio.

You can get a very nice paint job with the VL, like has already been said practice, practice, practice.

I have a VL and a Badger 100. Personally, I think the VL is a pretty good all around airbrush. I like the Badger 100 a bit better, but the VL is nothing to sneeze at. A few things I'd suggest:
- if it's been sitting around for a while, give it a good cleaning.
- check the needle to be sure it's not bent. If so, replace it (Paasche parts are pretty easy to find)
- I find that the #3 needle/nozzle is best for the majority of the work I do. If you're going to use the #1, the paint needs to be pretty thin...
- as mentioned, I find that the VL generally uses higher psi than my badger.
- get a color cup if you don't have one. They're a lot easier for doing small paint jobs.
- practice, practice, practice ..... and have fun.

Enjoy!
