Airbrushing Question
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 10:14 AM
Hey Fellow Modelers,
I'm using MM acrylics and my Aztec double action airbrush, and the coverage I'm getting seems to be really weak. Plenty of paint seems to be coming out of the nozzle, but it just is not covering very well. Am I using too much air, or the wrong brand of paint? I'm using a general purpose nozzle. I first tried thinning the paint a bit, and then just used it right out of the bottle, and the result was the same.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, John

P.S. I was spraying Gloss White without priming first, so maybe that's why I wasn't getting good adhesion???

I'm not sure that you're going to get coverage you seem to be expecting from acrylic gloss white. What I usually do is apply extra coats until I get what I need. It is important to let the first "mist" coat cure before proceeding. Acrylic yellow, white and sometimes red just don't seem to lay down like enamels through the airbrush. You're probably fine with your equipment and mixture, just take the extra steps to recoat until you're optimum finish is acheived.

MM Acryl is good paint, I use a lot of it. As Crockett mentioned white and yellow just do not cover well and it takes several coats to get a good coverage. If the plastic is dark I always try to use a light colored primer before spraying either of those colors.

Thanks Scott & Steve,
I didn't let the first coat cure like I should have. Is it a good idea to apply an enamel primer before spraying an acrylic color, especially white or yellow?
Thx, John

Acrylics dry fast. I've had no problems applying subsequent coats after 15 minutes of drying time in front of a fan.

Acrylics do not adhere to plastic very well at all. They basically just form a coating over the plastic. The tales of people (myself included) who spent a lot of time getting a paint job just right only to have masking tape rip it to shreds are numerous.

Enamels and laquers adhere to plastic much better than acrylics, and acrylics adhere to primer much better than they do to bare plastic. Scuffing the plastic with fine sandpaper, steel wool, or even ScotchBrite pads helps acrylics adhere better. Priming parts is the best way. I have never had acrylic over primer pull up.
