Substitute colors?!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 5:45 AM
We all know that a lot of the kit makers like to use their own colors and will often give a color from their own range rather than the real color.
Lets list all those colors that we are aware off.

For one many manufacturers will call for "Flat Black" rather than "Tire Black" for rubber items on the real thing.

Lets also list substitutes that we found that worked better than the supplied model colors.

I often replace Gold with a coat of Gloss Aluminum followed by a coat of clear yellow.

Dark gray Krylon primer (#1318) is a great match for German Panzer Gray. Decanted and shot through an airbrush it covers well, doesn't bury detail and you can weather to your hearts content with no problems.

We can't ignore those ridiculous callouts for "silver" on landing gear when the color should be natural steel or painted on aluminum. In fact, a lot of instructions will say "silver' when in fact, when was the last time you saw anything silver colored on an airplane? I use chrome silver on oleo struts when I can't get the Bare Metal foil to stick to it.
