i think you need to play with the colors a bit to get the right combination

I've been using oil washes for some time now and have recently encountered a new and frustrating result. I'm using a burnt umber over future over khaki. I've done this dozens of time with the typical wash result but this time, the wash dries like dried mud instead of a deeper brown inside the lines and folds and doesn't highlight the details like a good wash should
