Compressor Air Flow Capacity
Posted by genj53john on Monday, December 20, 2004 7:56 PM
I've just realized why I can't achieve over about 12 to 15 psi with my Badger 155 using a Testor Mini Blue Compressor. While the compressor is able to develop up to 40 psi static pressure and it does not have sufficient air flow to maintain a pressure drop of more than 12 to 15 psi with the AB full open. So here's the question. When buying a compressor what do I look for in terms of specification? Its got to be both pressure and air capacity (flow rate)? What are good figures of merit? I've been doing ok up to now but would like more flexability in delivery pressure.

I don't have specific numbers, but any hobby type compressor and DEFINITELY commercial style compressors will do the job... the badger garage sale has a nice refurbished compressor for only $99.00 and it will definitely do the job, if noise is not an issue you can go to Lowes or even WalMart and get one of their CH compressors in the hardware dept for about $69... I have one and I can blow at 50psi (cleaning my brush) just fine! could probably go higher but never had a need to...

Iwata, Paasche and Badger all make good hobby compressors... the link to the Thayer and Chandler I told you about on the garage sale site is: http://www.badger-airbrush.com/garagesale.htm the compressor is at the bottom of the page and has a 6 month warranty... (about the same as my new in the box construction compressor)

My compressor is not horribly loud, and because it has a 2 gal tank I can spray for about 15 to 20 min using my Badger 155 without refilling the tank... now that doesn't seem like a lot, but if you think about the little puffs you are giving as you paint, versus a full open constant spraying that translates into almost the full exterior of a 1/48 aircraft without refilling...

not to sway you to one side or the other... the blue ice has limitations... mainly its not meant to be used with a regulator I am seeing, and it can't handle airbrushes with a lot of flow it seems... both of the compressors I mentioned are very good... one is quiet, the other is a little louder but has an airtank so you can paint at night for awhile with no noise at all...

it all boils down to what you want and how much noise you can put up with... new hobby style compressors range from $120 to 300 plus dollars... which is why I mentioned the refurbished one...
