Problems with Tamiya acrylic paint
Posted by four-star on Sunday, January 23, 2005 7:53 AM
Hi, I'm currently brush painting using some Tamiya acrylic paint, and when I apply a second coat, after a few moments the new paint seems to partially melt/soften the first coat of paint. This occurs even when the original coat is fully cured (several days). Usually this is not a major issue, as the original coat drys again as the top coat drys and it all looks fine. However, I want to apply a coat of Tamiya clear acrylic over an original coat of paint. This is a problem as you can actually see the paint underneath the clear acrylic is being attacked and the finish is not very satisfactory. Has any one else had this problem? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

yeah I've had that happen trying to use Tamiya Smoke over IJN Green... you should use Future and clear coat it before you paint the other color on top, it will keep it from dissolving the base paint.

I try never to hand brush with tamiya acrylics. I find enamels hand brush much better.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will use future instead of the clear acrylic. I usually use enamels so I don't have much experience with acrylics. Do all acrylics do this melting thing, or is it specific to the Tamiya brand?

I've only nitced it with Tamiya bezics... and only that one time... other colors of tamiya don't seem to mind being one atop the other... just their clear ones I guess...

Not all of Tamiya's paints have that problem, but some do. The worst one I've run across is black (flat or gloss) but I did see it once on either white or yellow (can't remember which now). I like Tamiya acrylics and use them a lot, but this problem is such a nuisance that I refrain from using Tamiya paint if I'm going to have to hand brush over it.

This may be a silly question, but the Tamiya enamels don't do this dissolving thing as well do they?

No they don't - its only a problem with acrylic.
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.
