Help needed applying washes.
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 28, 2005 1:30 PM
Hi all,

I am currently building Tamiya's 1/12th scale Ducati 888 Superbike and want to add a little depth to the engine. I'm using Tamiya acrylics and have tried thinning a little black with water but it doesn't dry in the recesses. It dries outside of the areas I want it to get to and leaves horrible water marks everywhere. I'm trying to use a very thin mixture as I don't want to change the overall colour just add some depth. I 've used washes before on miniatures but I don't want that kind of dramatic look on a scale model. Any help would be great as currently it look s like a 5 year old painted it!!!!Disapprove [V]

Sounds like you need to break the surface tension of the liquid so it doesn't pool. Try adding a liitle window cleaner liquid (in the US, windex works fine). with ammonia. I've heard others using Isopropyl Alchohol for the same purpose.

Thanks, would I have to use some form of clearcoat first to prevent the window cleaner stripping the paint underneath?

When doing armor models we use a "sludge wash" composed of thinner, paint, and liquid dish soap something like a 5-3-2 ratio, but the recipee is not exact. You'd probably want to go a bit lighter on the paint else you'd end up dirtier than you like. If you post this in either the armor or auto forum I bet you get swamped with ideas.
Good luck.

I always put a coat of Future on a model before using a wash - that makes it easier to wipe up the excess - comes right off the gloss surface
