Spray Booth Completed - Now To Start Painting :)
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 8:47 PM
My last post (about 3 weeks ago) was a "thank you" post to this forum as I was able to find out all I needed to know before diving back into this hobby - I realized that I would need a spray booth so I built one (after seeing online ones for upwards of $300 USD or more). I got the basic idea from this site:
http://www.rachelspages.com/calypso/html/booth.htm

I used a 265CFM blower to cover off a 24" wide x 18" high x 18" max depth booth that I built from 1/2" plywood and some 1x8 pine board. I figure I would post some photos of the booth since, when searching online for plans, I never found decent photos of a booth.

Here we go:
http://www.chang-sang.com/photo/030905/front.jpg - here's the front of the booth - plexiglass front on a swing hinge attached to a 6", in width, top.

http://www.chang-sang.com/photo/030905/back1.jpg - here you can see how I mounted the blower to the back of the booth - the filter is held in place by just some scrap plywood screwed into the mounting pieces

http://www.chang-sang.com/photo/030905/side.jpg - the basic shape of the side panels for the booth

http://www.chang-sang.com/photo/030905/bottom.jpg - a bit of detail in how the blower exhausts to the aluminum exhaust tubing.

http://www.chang-sang.com/photo/030905/tube.jpg - finally the aluminum exhaust tubing is mounted to a plastic vent which exhausts out of the room.

What would I do differently if I re-build it? Well, I would use thicker plywood next time, 1" instead of 1/2" - this would allow for a bit more stable mounting (imho) of the blower to the back of the booth.

Total cost?
Material wise (approx):
Plywood $26 CDN (I've got enough left over to build another booth)
Plexiglass $20 CDN
Hardware (hinges etc): $15 CDN (includes all screws and nails)
Filter: $10 CDN
Mounts (includes Aluminum tubing): $25 CDN
Blower: $150 CDN

Cheers and thanks,
Dave

Thanks Dave!
You have just given me something to take my mind off being un-employed for at least a couple of days. Seems like all the parts I need I already have.
Cheers!

You're welcome Ryan :)

If you've got the parts it's pretty easy.
I had doubted, initially, that I could do it but it seems to work just fine.

I'll be trying it out later this evening once I get back home from work :D

Cheers

Thanks for the compliment Tom

From my understanding - as I said, I haven't "tested" it out yet Smile [:)] - but it "should" help stop the dust etc from getting caught in the paint job. The suggestion I've read is to start up the blower for about 5-10min prior to painting.

The blower is industrial grade so it should have no issues at all running for extended periods of time and 5-10 minutes is minor.

This should help evacuate any dust or particulate that may be floating around in the booth itself. The hood of the booth (i.e. the plexiglass) should prevent much of the floating dust etc from the room itself to enter the booth.

That being said, there's that gap at the bottom where I have to put my hands in to manipulate the kit in order to paint so, while the booth should prevent a lot of those pubes Big Smile [:D] (and ya.. I know what you're talking about and they do look like that) it might not prevent 100% of them because there is still an entry point for them .

CheersCool [8D]

dave, nice work.

do you happen to update your booth ever since ? please post the picture.

1 question, why don't you leave a plenum inbetween blower and your filter ?
