question bout orange peel
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 25, 2005 6:32 PM
hey all
ive just ab'ed my first car body and theres some major orange peel ( i think my pressure was to low( on my comp (c&h quiet air) the psi drops a bit when i start spraying, is that normal?) ive given it a lighht sand, but there is still some rough spots....
well, my queston is this...If i put several thik coats of future on the body, and then polish that out smooth, will the orage peel still show thru? the reason i ask is coz the shinyness of the paint os determined by how uniformly smooth the paint surface is, right?

thanks in advance!!!

You've done better than me. I've not been able to recover from orange peel at all. Last time I got it was on the final gloss coat of my 707 (AFO). 2 primer coats. Tricolor base coats with masking. Full fuselage decals. 2 fine gloss coats. It was all perfect until the last gloss coat. Everything slowed down like in a car accident as I watched it happen. There was nothing I could do. My mind went completely blank. Although thats not uncommon for me LOL!!!!

I would completely strip the paint and start over because car body finishes are so critical to have as perfect as possible.

tominator, I think your suggestion is a good one. Give the body a few coats of any compatible clear, let it harden and then polish it out. You could just polish out the paint but you risk sanding through to the plastic. After polishing use a model wax like The Treatment to really bring out the shine.

thanks for the help ppls....
i was thinking bout stripping the body, but i cant be bothered, and its just a practice kit coz the body has been twisted outta shape
fyi, i used 'chux magic erasers' to sand (rub?) out the orange peel. they are these little white foam blocks, used for cleaning hard surfaces. i really like em, as they conform to the surfaces and i think they do a good job...
also, i cant seem to find any modelling wax over here, so im using kitten #1 polishing wax. does anyone else here use automotive polishes fopr model cars?
