Masking and Finishing Help
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 3, 2005 2:11 PM
Hello! I was needing some help with my model. I'm putting together a Tamiya 1/12 motorcycle for a friend. First I put gray primer on the parts. Then put down gloss black Tamiya spray. Which came out awsome. I let it dry well. Then I masked the the parts and sprayed it with yellow (not my first choice but his hehe). Anyway... the two tone came out fairly well. Only on about 2 of the 8 or so parts kinda ran, but not badly. I removed the masking, and was pleased with the look of the paint. The only thing I have a problem with (which I expected) was the built up edge where the masking was (and a couple places where the paint bleed but very very lightly, probably could rub off). I would like someone to guide me on finishing the model form the point. I've read a lot trying to find out what to do but was unsucessful, but looks like people sand with a super high grit paper then clear. Thanks for the help! (Post links if you have them!)

Hi Just 10 here are some tips that will help you for next time......Iif your getting a built up edge then your paint cote may have been applied to thickly. Are you using an airbrush or aerosol can ? different factors can cause this suchas the airbrush being to close or to far away from the subject.......or the airbrush is not moving across the subject in a gentle sweeping uniform motion.Build up light coats gradually ! Make sure your mask is sealed properly before you paint ( tamiya masking tape is the best !)
Always spray light coloured paints such as yellow before darker colours. Weak pigment colours such as yellow and white will often need a light undercoat .( testors aluminium plate buffing metalizer is good primer for this.)

To sand back paint you can use wet and dry sand paper (use it with a little water )which can be found at hardware stores working from around 800 grit or so (Depending how thick you layed it on)through to 2000 grit . this will work out the scratches.
hope this helps ...........Peter.

It was spray cans. My big mistake was trying to paint over black with yellow... so much for instructions! Hehe... but I must say it turned out really good to be my first ever. I believe sand paper will work well. I assume it will dull... What will be the best way to bring the shine back and seal the paint? Thanks! Oh and I have a an airbrush. Never been used. I believe its a badger SL? I just don't have an air compressor... I guess I need to find a cheap one... Thanks!!

AB are a awesome tool I cant imagine being asked to build a model without 1 at this point. It would kinda be like being asked to not use glue.

After your sand back then you simply repaint . I remember the good old days when i didn't own a compressor and all i had was a cheap airbrush kit. What this kit did have however was an adaptor to hook up to a spare car tire. Every time my parents whent out i'd chuck the tire in the boot ( trunk ) and ask if they could fill up my tire at the local gas station so i could spray paint. I would always run out of air just as everything started to work well. I don't recomend this as i'm sure there are some cheap compressors around that you could pick up (maybe even second hand ?)
but if you can get one airbrushing will take your models to the next level ! Good luck !
