Ever tried Vallejo Air paints?
Posted by fiasco on Sunday, May 22, 2005 3:17 PM
I'm currently building a red arrows hawk for the aerobatic teams GB. I decided to use masks to paint the white stripes on the aircraft so I've painted a base coat of white. I used Vallejo Air paint unthinned from the bottle as recommended. I've got a gravity fed badger 200 AB and a simair compressor.
I really struggled to stop the paint from soaking the model. I've backed off the pressure as far as the crude adjuster on the compressor will allow (about 10psi on the dial) and wound the needle in,but the paint is just too thin!
Anyone have any similar experiences?
Would it be okay to spray Tamiya Acrylic or Xtracolour enamel over the top or will I have to strip it and start again?

how odd, I have used both Color of Eagles made by Vallejo and Vallejo Model Air with no probs... in fact they spray on a little dry if I am not careful....

So you arent thinning them... do you have your preset volume set all the way back? I use a double action so I dont know how you are set for volume of paint.. thats the first thing I would change....

Ads far as another brand I would go for Gunze before Tamiya, not to say Tamiya wouldnt work... but It would be my second choice...

I've stuck it out with the Vallejo backing off the distance of the brush to the surface at the risk of the paint drying before it gets there, but it seems to have worked. Spraying several mist coats at a distance of about 8" seems to have done the trick.

wow... 8 inches? hmmm that sounds like something else is at play here. when you shut your pressure off the regulator dial goes to 0 and not lower? With mine I spray at about 3 to 4 inches with no probs..... glad you found a fix in the meantime but hope you can figure out the main issue!

Good luck to you!

The regulator is on the bottom of the moisture trap and is a crude sprung screw with a rubber washer. The problem I have found is that when you back off the screw the vibration of the pump causes the screw to work lose and fall out!

you might try to locate a regulator for it of the standard commercial type. You can just leave the other one screwed in all the way... You should have a lot more fine control over the pressure your airbrush is delivering...

You can get them at the local hardware store or wherever they sell air compressors. They are about $20 US here.
