How can I strip paint off a yardsale model?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 18, 2005 12:29 AM
Hi. I bought 2 Star Trek models at a yard sale, still in boxes, but they both had parts that had already been painted. I am not happy with the results, and want to strip the paint off, but don't know what type of paint had been used. Some of it looks like enamle, and some looks like oil based, but I'm not sure. Can anyone recommend anything. I'm new at this, and would hate to ruin the models. Thanks for any help I can get.

Easy Off oven cleaner and Castrol Super Clean both work well. With either one, put the model in a plastic bag and spray the cleaner on it. Close the bag and let it sit several hours to overnight. WEARING GLOVES, take a toothbrush and brush the remaining paint off and rine under water. (they are both rather caustic and can do some damage to unprotected skin)

Then you're ready to repaint! I've used Castrol for everything including lacquer and it works great! I've heard the same for Easy Off.

I use oven cleaner; I let it sit for about 30minutes then rub it with a rag. then toss it back into the bag for another 30min and then I wash it with a sponge with some soapy water. comes out pristine every time. the 2nd wash gets the reccessed bits clean.
