Gloss coat gone wrong
Posted by plane mad on Thursday, June 30, 2005 4:35 PM
Why didn't my gloss coat turn out ?

After spraying a base color coat of enammel and waiting for it to dry i then proceeded with building up several thin coats of tamiya acrylic clear. the problem was that it never became shiny and appeared kind of course as if the paint was to thick. I'm sure all my basics were right( and i know what i'm doing ) such as Properly mixed paint , distance of the airbrush to subject , Pressure setting , correct thinner ratio etc. So i'm not sure what happened

the only thing i can think of is that my enamel coat wasn't cured fully and it somehow reacted witht he gloss. Usually i wait over night ( and i've never had a problem with this ) but i'm sure i left it a few days in between. Also ,i soak my aztek nozzels in lacquer thinner so perhaps there was some residue left in the nozzel that somehow reacted but i sprayed water through ti to clean it out. Is it possible to get a bad tin of paint ????? I look forward to hearing your thoughts , Thanks.

coarse as in like sand paper? that would probably be the too high pressure, too far from the model thing I would think... you should be able to sand it with very fine grit paper until smooth then shoot another coat on top...

In the future i would stick with laquer based gloss cotes for enamel bases. And, no pun intended, but did you consider just using Future for your gloss coat seal?

you say youve done it before so I assume its worked before;but I thought with tamiyas certain thinners made them not so glossy...

I use Tamiya clear and always mix it with Tamiya thinner. I always put on 2-3 light coats then my last coat I put on fairly wet. When dry it shines better than Future. It works for me.

I know you said you've done this before, but did you consider the temp and humidity. I have repeated successful procedures before myself that have been affected by the weather and produced unhappy results. Usually the cause is not enough dry/cure time for the paint under the clear coat. I think crockett has some good suggestions too regarding lacquer clear coats and Future over enamels. Both take the guesswork out of the quotient.
