Revelle Paint persentages
Posted by richard bent on Friday, July 1, 2005 10:50 PM
Hi there I am returning to the modeling scene after a long absence,so this question may seem very basic to more experinced modelers. I am building a revelle F14 tomcat and have noticed that some of the used colors are stated in persentages, for instance 70% white matt and 30% stone grey matt . So I dont assume anything can i ask what exactly this means??

Hola Richard... welcome to FSM

Thats the direct paint mix. A good way to look at it is take an 2 empty clean paint jars and fill 1 70% full with matt white paint then add 30% gray paint to the white and gently stir with a toothpick or something. Pour this mix into your second empty paint jar then add an appropiete thinner to the first jar and shake it till you have all the left over paint and pour this into the second jar also.. this effectively thinning the paint for use.

Make sure you stay safe if youre using Lacquar thinners.

Some Tomcats are white, some are dirty white, some are gray, some are dirty gray. Look around on the internet and see if you can find pictures of the exact plane based on the tail number or pictures of other birds in the squadron. There are photos of virtually every Naval and USAF squadron around if you dig a bit.

http://files.photojerk.com/sasarchiver/F14A-tomcat.jpg

i just dont know the shade of grey im looking for i guess. Was just asking if maybe anyone has done this version and can tell me the color or ratio they used. Like its saying 70 white 30 stone grey, but that was for an intake at the back, instructions dont say if it should be painted on the body. So any hints/help would be appreciated big time, not good at colors my self ;)

thanks again musiccity, uve helped me more than once mate, greatful

I don't know exactly what the correct color is, but it will be a standard "FS" (Federal Standard) color. Most of the Model Master paints adhere to the FS standard (more or less). Here's a list of them

That one looks like "Light Ghost Gray" / "Light Compass Gray" FS-36375 however that is a gloss or semi-gloss finish so it would be FS-16375 (gloss) or FS-26375 (semi-gloss). I would have expected it to be flat gray though, not many fighters are glossy (don't want the sun shining on them to give their position away!)

lol couldnt remember where this post was lol

yea musiccity, i wouldnt say many are glossy :) I would have though a matt grey myself, im not good with shades :( But this 70% white and 30% stone grey is going to look very white lol cos the lid of the grey paint (Revell enamel stone grey, no.75) looks pretty light, and 70% white...Must be right ofcourse but my memeroy of a f14 was darker, but i realize now that there lods of diff colors for squads, enviroment etc etc....That grey link u sent looks ok, and i will see if i can get it tomorrow.

Thanks again for ur help musiccity, regards gordon j

PS is there such a place u can goto to get the right colors of kits, pref with model/picture shown?

Not that I'm aware of. With USAF and Navy planes the colors are frequently squadron specific. Navy planes are especially prone to weathering because of the salt air they are constantly exposed to. A squadron with relatively new planes may have a completely different shade from one with older planes. Even individual planes within a squadron can be different. If you want the color as close to real as you can get it your best bet is to search Google for the squadron the plane was assigned to. The letters on the tail will identify the squadron (the site you gave above is down right now so I can't check to see what it is)

Compare this Tomcat:

To this one:

You just can't depend on a specific color for all of them. They just get too beat up over time.
