home-made spray booth -how?

Hi,
I'm thinking of building one (or buying a respirator...).
I'm planning to use an opaque plastic box with lamps and some ventillation, but I have a few questions.
I'm not really familiar with electronics; I need a fan that's not going to bust into flames when the organic solvents reach it. Also, how do you attach it to the electric grid? (I mean the fans I saw do not work with 110V. Should I get a computer power source and some cooling fans for CPUs?
Where do you went the fumes? I rent an apartman, and I don't think my landlord would be extatic if I cut a circle in the window for the tube... Do you think placing the box to the open window would be enough?
Do I need a filter before the fan? If I do, then what kind?

And a bonus question (I don't want to open a new topic): how on Earth do you make Alclad metal-like? I used testors gloss black as a primer, and on one part Alclad is really superb, while on the other it's flat... Why's the difference?

I'm kinda in the same boat with the whole spraying thing, I only have the basement, so I am using w huge TV box, with the joins sealed with tape, then I will use a PC fan to draw air out of the box, into another box on the side, stuffed with cut up old T-shirts, I know the solvent fumes will still be there, but the paint spray will be stopped by the material. I will use a face mask as well(twin cartridge type).
We're in rented, so I can't go putting a tube outside either, it's a real pain, as I don't want to paint by hand, well not the big stuff anyway.

I built a spray booth using a bathroom exhaust fan. I've read differing opinions on those with respect to the fire hazard you mentioned. I figured that if they are UL approved for use in in environment where they may well be expected to suck down hairspray, that may be the fire hazard aspect is overrated. In several years of use, I've never had a hint of fire.

As for your exhaust, regardless of fan type used, does your window slide open? If so, you could cut a board or stiff piece of cardboard five or six inches wide and as tall as the window. Cut your hole for the duct ( used 4" metal dryer duct for mine) in the filler piece which you can place into the window opening, closing the window against it. Fumes exit the aparment and the landord is happy.

I built my spray booth using a computer fan, and used 4" dcut to go out the window in my basement. I have slider windows but the screen doesn't slide out of the way. I added a cut down furnace filter to collect some of the spray before going out and staining the screen. I also bought a package of vent (floor registar) filters at Home Depot (they are cheap) and cut them to fit at the end of the duct that touches the screen. I took an empty margerine cup and cut the bottom out and slip that over the duct to hold my piece of vent filter. So far I have no staining on my screen. Hope this will be of some help.
